How to Get Married in Seattle Without Telling Everyone First
Not everyone wants a wedding with an audience. Some people just want to be married, and they want to decide later who needs to know about it.
That is more common than the wedding industry lets on. For every couple planning a year out with a guest list and a seating chart, there is one who would rather skip the announcement entirely. No opinions from relatives. No questions about why now. No production. Just the two of you, a legal ceremony and the quiet that comes after.
If that is you, you are not being difficult. You are being clear about what you want. A private, Seattle elopement.
Quiet does not have to mean the courthouse
The usual assumption is that a private wedding means a courthouse appointment. It does not. The courthouse is one option and it is fine, but it is also a difficult-to-get appointment, a fluorescent room, a line and a judge reading from a card.
Eloping somewhere small gets you the same legal result without any of that. You keep it between the two of you and it still feels like the awesome event it is.
What a private ceremony here looks like
We are a pink wedding chapel in Georgetown, built inside a shipping container. If pink is not your thing, there is a outdoor covered gazebo. Bronwen officiates and has been doing this since 2010. It can be just the two of you, and nothing gets posted anywhere. Guests are welcome if you want them. So are pets.
You can keep it short or take your time. You can write vows or skip them.
We do not announce anything. No posts, no photos, no mention of your name anywhere. Some couples do want a video afterward, and if you ask us for one we will happily make it (you can see some examples on our Instagram.) Who finds out, and when, is entirely your call.
The one part you cannot skip
Here is the piece that no one getting married in Washington State can skip: Washington requires a marriage license, and there is a three day wait between the day you apply and the day you can marry. So a spur of the moment ceremony is not a real thing here (unless you already have your license), no matter what anyone tells you.
Sort the marriage license a few days ahead and the rest is easy. It is the only part of this that takes any planning, and it is not much. If your license is already valid, call us. We can often marry you the same day.
What you bring, what we handle
You bring:
Each other
Your valid marriage license once it is issued
Rings and vows (only if you want them!)
We handle:
A legal ceremony with a licensed officiant
Witnesses if you need them, so you do not have to let anyone in on it
Music - we'll play your favorite songs
Photos - we'll snap some pictures for you (our phone or yours!)
Filing the paperwork after
A space that feels like a wedding and not a jury duty assignment
That witness part matters more than people expect. If keeping it private is the whole point, the last thing you want is to recruit a friend to stand there. You do not have to. We have it covered.
You tell people when you are ready
Some couples tell everyone the next morning. Some wait months. Some frame the certificate and never make a single post about it. All of that is allowed. That is the actual point of a private wedding. The timeline belongs to you, not to a group chat.
When you are ready, you can book online and pick a date that works around your license. If you are not sure about the timing, reach out and we will help you figure it out.
$500. About an hour. Nobody has to know until you decide they do. Come elope with us.
